Success Stories
Campus PhotoUniversity of St. Thomas alumni and students sparkle with success. Look in just about any field, and you’ll find UST alumni, more than 15,700 alumni scattered across the globe, leading the way. Consider the following:
  • The University of St. Thomas Best Buddies program received an Outstanding Chapter Award at the Best Buddies International 19th Annual Student Leadership Conference July 18-21. UST was chosen as one of 18 college chapters from more than 400 college Best Buddies programs throughout the world for committing their time to people with intellectual disabilities.

  • An attorney, a refugee, and an engineering student aspiring to be an astronaut would seem like an unlikely trio with little in common. Never-the-less, these three men, united in faith, graduated from the University of St. Thomas School of Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary, and were ordained into the priesthood on May 31, 2008.

  • The University of St. Thomas congratulates Mark Lopez, a 2005 UST Cameron School of Business graduate, for winning the silver medal in the Taekwondo men's featherweight division at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Lopez and his brother and sister were the first trio of siblings to represent the United States in the same Olympics since 1904.

  • Emily Shaw, an environmental studies and political science double major, was named the first and sole recipient of the $10,000 New York University Steinhardt EnergyWatch Fellowship. Shaw will pursue a master’s degree in environmental conservation education.

  • Joseph Mikolaj, a 2008 UST music graduate, is one of eight students accepted to the master’s program at Yale University School of Music. He received a full scholarship and a significant living stipend to study in the Early Music, Song, and Chamber Ensemble voice program at Yale University . Only one student per vocal part is admitted into the program.

  • UST communications graduate, Chester Soria ’06, was named as one of nine recipients of the Spira Lopez Journalism Internship at “The Nation,” political magazine. The internship is offered to college students or graduates of Latino or Hispanic origin interested in magazine journalism and publishing. Soria, a former editor of “The Cauldron,” UST’s student newspaper, will move to New York City in June 2008 to begin his three-month summer internship.

  • UST international studies majors Thomas Mendez and Jessie Martinez have been awarded the Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial Scholarship for the 2009/2010 academic year, allowing them the opportunity to study abroad and serve as ambassadors of goodwill to their host country for nine months following graduation from UST.

  • UST biology major Nam Nguyen received the John C. Johnson award for his scientific poster presentation at the South Central Regional Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society meeting, qualifying him to present at the national Tri-Beta meeting this summer. Nguyen won the highest honor for the competition, which encompassed 40 to 50 posters.

  • UST history major Whitney Stewart has been chosen as one of 10 students from universities across the United States as a SHEAR/Mellon Undergraduate Fellow. The award will provide funding for Stewart to travel to Philadelphia to conduct research in what many historians consider to be the best archives for early American history.

  • University of St. Thomas student Ruth Cañas has been named a recipient of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color and will receive up to $22,100 to pursue a graduate degree. She was one of 25 college juniors to receive the award.

  • Center for International Studies student Patricia Manjarrez has been named University of St. Thomas Global Ambassador by the World Affairs Council of Houston. The Global Ambassador initiative for the 2008-2009 academic year was launched to bring some of the most outstanding college students to 6-12th grade classrooms to speak about their experiences abroad.

  • Kaitlyn Murphy and Aimee Bertrand’s experiences with UST’s Master in Liberal Arts program lead to promising career opportunities and meaningful relationships

  • UST alum John Joerns spent the fall of 2007 working in the center of the nation’s capital after being selected as a White House intern.

  • Shirley Ronquillo ‘01 is one of two UST international studies alumnae who have been selected to travel to South Korea to participate in the Houston Rotary Club’s Young Ambassador Exchange Program.

  • University of St. Thomas Freshman Truc Le is a Gates Millenium Scholarship receipient. A GMS award is determined by unmet need based on the financial aid award package provided by the nominee’s college or university. It will help pay the cost of attendance, which includes tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for the academic year. Le says she chose to come to school at UST because she was impressed by the dedication of its faculty and the school's strong science and liberal arts foundation.

  • The University of St. Thomas is making a mark for itself in the collegiate music world after senior voice major Joe Mikolaj and sophomore voice major Eric Murillo placed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Texoma regional competition, Nov. 7-8.

  • Given these and the many other honors bestowed on students, alumni and faculty members, UST might seem like a giant incubator for success stories.

    But, hey, who’s counting?

    We are.
