Grants
Grants are awarded based on financial need and do not require repayment. Grant funds are provided by UST, Federal Programs, and State Programs. Financial Aid award packages will include grant funds whenever regulations, UST policies, and funding levels permit. Please note that the University is often limited by funding allocations – all grants are need-based, first-come first-served.
UST University Grant: This need-based grant is offered to undergraduate students deemed eligible by the University of St. Thomas.
Federal Pell Grant: This income-based grant is offered to undergraduates by the U.S. Department of Education.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG): This grant is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need (students with the lowest Expected Family Contributions [EFC]) and gives priority to students who receive a Federal Pell Grant.
Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG): This need-based grant is offered to eligible full-time and part-time undergraduate students who are Texas residents.
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG): This grant is based both on financial need (must be a Pell recipient), academic performance (second year recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0), and other criteria including
US citizenship. The ACG is awarded only to students in their 1st and 2nd academic years.
National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART): SMART grant eligibility criteria is very similar to the ACG, it is both financial need-based (must be a Pell recipient) and academic performance driven (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 assessed each term), as well as restricted to US citizens. There is one primary difference however; students must be majoring in an “eligible major.” The SMART grant is awarded only to students in their 3rd and 4th academic years.
