UST Best Buddies Volunteers Receive National Recognition
UST Best Buddies Volunteers Receive National RecognitionThe University of St. Thomas Best Buddies program received an Outstanding Chapter Award at the Best Buddies International 19th Annual Student Leadership Conference July 18-21. UST was selected as one of 18 college chapters from more than 400 college Best Buddies programs throughout the world for committing their time to people with intellectual disabilities.

Ellie Collier, UST Director of the Office of Volunteer Opportunities, congratulated and thanked students who gave volunteered with the Best Buddies program. “OVO has been so fortunate to have a hard-working dedicated leader for Best Buddies this past year,” Collier said.

Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Collaborating with the Center Serving People with Mental Retardation, the UST chapter was able to match more than twenty students with people with intellectual disabilities for the 2007-2008 school year. The chapter members visited their buddies at the Center at least once a week and hosted numerous group events throughout the year including dances, movie nights and visits to the Houston Zoo. Buddy Pairs also spent individual time together at least once a week.
